Chicago Cubs’ bid to sign Edwin Jackson being observed eagerly – MLB News
Fans would await the final outcome with bated breath.
The reports on Tuesday, December 18, that the Chicago Cubs are among the finalists to sign Edwin Jackson is likely to elicit mixed feelings. This comes a few days after the Cubs’ efforts to sign free-agent Anibal Sanchez came to naught.
The Cubs had reportedly offered a five-year, worth $77 million, deal to Sanchez. Add to it the concomitant reports that suggested that he was offered to be the Cubs’ ace. In the presence of Scott Baker, Scott Feldman, Matt Garza, Sanchez would have an essentially
prominent role.
But no sooner as the reports started making rounds than came the Detroit Tigers which did not want to lose their pitcher. Sanchez, after all, had a visibly dominant pitching spells during the postseason games.
The Tigers offered him $80 million deal and got him back. There, however, Sanchez would be pitching as 3 or 4 starter. That will be a different role altogether compared to what he would have got here.
However, what has now been seeking the Cubs’ attention is nothing but the pitcher Edwin Jackson – the former Chicago White Sox pitcher. Having played in seven clubs, and being recently part of the Washington Nationals, Jackson brings with himself experience
and exposure.
The Cubs, goes without saying, will be trying their level best to find a way out to strike a deal with the pitcher. The other finalist are the Texas Rangers after reports came to fore that San Diego Padres have dropped the bid due to the fourth year deal
that the pitcher and his agent Scott Boras demanded.
The Cubs, at the same time, are also satisfied with the recent deals with the pitchers like Scott Feldman and Scott Baker. The two will have a key role to play in the rotation during the season since the team is in building phase.
To be seen now whether or not the Cubs succeed in signing Jackson. At a time when they need experienced, powerful and consistent pitchers, Jackson makes a strong case with what he has to offer as his credential.
