Chicago Cubs crushed by Washington Nationals 2-9 – MLB Recap
The Chicago Cubs were crushed by the Washington Nationals 2-9 in the final game of their four-match regular series encounter on Thursday, September 6 at Nationals Park.
With this win, the Nationals also completed a four-game sweep and strengthened their position in their Division.
Cubs showed little resistance in the series but overall it was Washington, who just could not give them any chance to play with ease.
Nationals came out aggressive and proved their valour. They did not allow the Cubs to settle and eventually rattled them with big force.
"If they get mad at my guys in the fifth inning swinging 3-0 or running, they better get used to it, It was the bench coach's frustration in us handing it to him for a couple days, If they want to quit competing and forfeit, then fine. But we're going to keep competing,” Nationals’ manager Davey Johnson said on his team’s performance.
Later Chicago manager Dale Sveum said, "Castillo's a Rule 5 kid who's thrown a lot of them pitches today, There was no intention to hit Bryce Harper or anything because of what happened, It's probably one of the biggest butt-whippings I've ever gotten in my career, as a coach or player."
Starter Justin Germano started the game for the Cubs and allowed seven crucial runs on seven hits. He pitched four innings and struck-out two while received a homer as well on his 6.95.
Lendy Castillo pitched 1.1 innings and received one run and two hits. He struck-out one and could not maintain his ERA of 10.22.
Closer Jeff Beliveau pitched 0.2 innings and allowed one run and one hit on his 4.50 ERA. He struck-out one while he also received one homer as well.
On the other hand, Nationals’ starter Jordan Zimmermann pitched seven innings and allowed two runs and five hits. He retired nine batters and maintained his ERA at 2.99 which eventually proved one of the winning factors for the Nationals.
Zimmermann’s team-mate and relief pitcher Tom Gorzelanny also played well and supported his team with a decent win. He pitched 0.2 innings and allowed only one hit on his 3.16 ERA.
