Despite his not-so-satisfactory performance lately, the Chicago Cubs on Friday – June 22, decided to play Randy Wells in upcoming game against New York Mets. The game, which is scheduled for Tuesday, was initially thought to have Ryan Dempster as the starter, but the stage is all set for Wells now.
It was on Thursday that the team manager came up with the announcement that the Cubs have decided to keep Wells on the mound as starter for Tuesday’s game against the New York Mets.
"We'll stick with Wells for right now," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said. "Something could change, but right now Wells will pitch on Tuesday."
This comes at a time, like said earlier, when his performance was not up to the mark. The starter had given no less than five hits, four walks in the first chance that he got against the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday. He pitched 3 2/3 innings, and the end result was disappointing.
The Chicago Cubs lost the game by 7-0, a blow that was indeed too big for the team. There are a few weak spots, the vulnerable ones, that he needs to quickly overcome. This was something that the team manager also referred to.
Among the weaknesses are the walks that he has given. In 25 2/3 innings that he has thrown, he has allowed 20 walks, and has had only 11 strikeouts to his credit.
According to Dale Sveum, this problem has to be overcome. "The walks have killed him, especially the non-competitive ones," Sveum said. "He's got to get the ball over the strike zone. We have to get that turned around. You have to make them put the ball in play."
In his 11 games in the Major League Baseball this season, Wells has won only 1 game, with 4.91 ERA, a performance that hardly merits laudation. It will be closely seen in the days to come if he can elevate himself to the position which the team and fans want of him. Whether he does that or not, for now, the team would like him to give an impressive performance in Thursday’s game.
