Chicago Cubs defeat Cincinnati Reds 4-3 – MLB Update
Tony Campana hit a homer on Friday, August 5 to help the Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-3 at Wrigley Field.
The victory provided a perfect start to the Chicago Cubs in the three-game series as the Cincinnati Reds failed to make gains when opportunities came their way.
All the same, Campana executed a hit at a crucial moment to pave the way for the sixth straight win for the Cubs. Something, that brought glee for the player and the team as a whole.
Asked how he felt, he said, “It was fun. Got out there and had a chance to play. Every time I get out there, I just try to make things exciting. I think I did that today."
The team manager Mike Quade was equally buoyed. "What a day (Campana) had, huh? Little son of a gun got off the plane -- I don't even know if he slept -- and did one heck of a job."
Much the same, Ryan Dempster tossed six effective innings to help strengthen the Cubs’ defence. "It was all right," Dempster said. "I felt like I battled good. One minute I felt like I could throw the ball where I want, the next I was hoping to hit somewhere
around the plate."
Friday’s game got rolling in the very first inning as Mike Leake came on the mound to pitch against the Cubs’ hitters. Chicago’s offence seemed to be well-prepared to go for big hits against the Cincinnati starter.
Campana, the young Cubs’ hitter, got a hit and an inside-the-park homer that gave the Chicago an early 2-0 lead that Dempster was supposed to defend. Dempster did that with phenomenal efficacy.
While he pitched a shut-out second inning, Tyler Colvin, having already had a 2-0 lead for the Cubs in the game, hit a homer that tripled the team’s lead in the game against the struggling Mike Leake. Dempster put the third inning as a scoreless one.
However, the fourth inning gave the Cincinnati hitters an opportunity to open up their bats. Mike Leake, who had given up three runs, tried to compensate that with an RBI single that he hit in the fourth against Dempster.
Frazier followed with another single to bring the lead down to 3-2. However, Dempster then pitched shut-out innings until Sean Marshall relieved him. Carlos Pena, on the other hand, drove in another single in the seventh to give the Cubs a safe 4-2 lead.
Ramon Hernandez came back with a homer in the eighth to bring the Cubs lead down to 4-3, but could not go beyond that as Carlos Marmol threw a shut-out ninth inning to turn the 4-3 lead into victory for the Cubs.
