Chicago Cubs defeat Florida Marlins, 7-5 – MLB Update
A group effort from different batters of the Chicago Cubs resulted in their club’s 7-5 victory against the Florida Marlins at Sun Life Stadium, Florida, on May 18.
The Marlins got off the mark in the very first inning with 1-0 lead when Hanley Ramirez struck a one-run homer towards the right-field position. The Cubs were not able to score a single run during first inning as Darwin Barney flied out to centre-field while
Starlin Castro was struck out swinging. No score was added in the second inning from either side.
The Cubs rallied in the third inning and tied the game with 1-all when Koyie Hill made a single on a sacrifice fly off Kosuke Fukudome, who moved to second base. The fourth inning remained empty for both teams and the score was unmoved. The fifth inning
went full of score as the Cubs added two runs and the Marlins scored four runs in it.
Hill scored another run during the fifth inning on the sacrifice bunt of Barney off the right field position. Fukudome scored a single run, when Castro moved to second base on the error of Logan Morrison. On the other side, the Marlins stepped on the gas
to end the fifth inning with a 5-3 lead. Gaby Sanchez drove a shot for a single and Ricky Nolasco posted one run. Sanchez contributed one run when Greg Dobbs doubled to deep left-centre field.
Dobbs was impressive with the bat as he went 2-for-5 and completed a four-run campaign on the single shot of Mike Stanton. The sixth inning went in favour of the Cubs as they levelled the game with 5-all when Reed Johnson hit a one-run homer and Hill singled
to left-centre field position. No score was added in the seventh inning from both teams.
In the eighth inning, Marlon Byrd homered to left-field and Tony Campana scored one run on the grounder of Jeff Baker. The score-card was 7-5 at the end of eighth inning. The last inning went score-less. The Cubs’ Manager Mike Quade said of the game, “We
took advantage of a few mistakes, instead of the other way around.”
The starters of both teams were too expensive with the ball as they gave away five runs on their respective pitches.
