Chicago Cubs defeat Kansas City Royals 6-4 – MLB Update
The Chicago Cubs defeated the Kansas City Royals 6-4 at the Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri on Friday, June 24.
The match, lasting almost three hours, kept the fans entertained with wily pitching and forceful hitting throughout the game.
Aramis Ramirez scored the first of his two runs for the Chicago Cubs at the top of the first innings. He was matched by Alex Gordon from the Kansas City Royals who added his first of the two in the second innings, levelling the scores at one each with two
innings played.
Both teams picked impetus in the fourth inning when the Cubs scored two runs as the Royals scored three courtesy Jeff Francoeur’s massive 409 feet hit.
Ramirez scored his second run followed by Carlos Pena, who worked for his run in the fourth innings to take a two-run lead. The Royals lived to their name and responded in style with Francoeur unleashing his arms to record his tenth home-run of the season,
taking his career tally to 110. He was followed by Gordon, who scored his second run for the night and Alcides Escobar who added a run to take lead from the Cubs for the first time in the match, with the score at 4-3.
Neither team could add a score during the fifth and sixth innings owing to some precise pitching. The Cubs levelled in the seventh innings when Pena added his second run for the night to match his team-mate Ramirez’s feat.
The match, levelled at four runs each, entered into a decisive ninth innings where either team could have won. It was the Cubs who handled pressure. Chris Getz’s error at second base allowed Tony Campana to complete one run before DJ LeMahieu sealed the
night by scoring one more.
The pitchers from both sides went neck-to-neck and it all came down to the relief pitchers to decide the fate of the match. Ryan Dempster from the Cubs and Bruce Chen from the Royals started almost identically, both going for four runs in six innings with
four strike-outs each. Chen now has 809 strike-outs in his career with Dempster sitting way ahead at 1666.
Sean Marshall came in as relief pitcher for the Cubs and pitched a dream spell. He pitched in the eighth innings without conceding a hit or a run. He pitched 11 times yielding nine strikes. His heroics won him his fourth game of the season, taking his win
tally to four.
Aaron Crow came as his counterpart from the Royals side in the eighth innings but luck was not by his side. He held things together till the eighth innings but couldn’t contain it in the second innings when a fielding lapse coupled his worry. He ended up
losing his first game of the season.
The next game between both sides is set for June 25 and the Royals, playing at home, will be upbeat to stage a comeback.
