Chicago Cubs defeat Milwaukee Brewers 7-1 – MLB Update
The Chicago Cubs delivered another blow to the Milwaukee Brewers’ bid of clinching the NL, beating them by 7-1 on Wednesday, September 22 at Wrigley Field.
The Brewers who are now three games away from becoming the NL Champions could not live up to the expectations of the fans during the game.
For the Milwaukee Brewers’ manager, it is something that has happened almost invariably. "It's this way every year when you're close to winning a division," Brewers’ manager Ron Roenicke said after a 7-1 loss.
Marlon Byrd hit a three-run homer and Matt Garza had a decent nine inning spell of pitching to contain the Milwaukee Brewers otherwise strong offence. "I'm sure we're going to go home and play well," Roenicke said."It's nice to clinch at home, but I really
don't care. I just want to get it. We would have loved to have done it here."
Randy Wolf, who gave up six runs in his 10-hit six innings, could not compete with his rival Matt Garza who had a magical spell of nine innings to go against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Wolf is not pessimistic regarding winning the NL. "It will be great to do it at home so we can spray some of the fans with champagne, that's something they've been dying for."
Corey Hart had a single in the third, the only run that Randy Wolf allowed, while Starlin Castro was quick to level the score. It was DJ LeMahieu who scored a two-run double to score the tie-breaking run for the Chicago Cubs.
Before Wolf could settle, Marlon Byrd hit a huge three-run homer to put the Chicago Cubs on the irreversibly strong winning track, giving them a 6-1 lead by the end of the sixth inning. The lead was, beyond a shadow of a doubt, was one that only Matt Garza
could save. As he eventually did just that.
Kameron Loe replaced Wolf after he pitched the sixth. However, Loe could not hold back the Chicago Cubs’ hitters. It was Geovany Soto who scored a one-run double to left in the 3-hit seventh inning to give the team a safe 7-1 lead.
Brewers tried to have their go, but all of their attempts did not bear any fruit to garner. There hardly came any moment when Matt Garza would allow the Brewers’ hitters to score, thus concluding the game with an impressive 7-1 win for the Cubs.
It would now be interesting to see how Milwaukee Brewers confront the situation whereby they have to fight hard to secure the NL title. The Brewers will be looking to put in an improved performance in their next match-up.
