Chicago Cubs defeat New York Mets 5-4 – MLB Update
Chicago Cubs romped to a 5-4 triumph in a close confrontation against the New York Mets in the second outing of the three-game series at Citi Field in New York on Saturday, September 10 to tie the series at 1-all.
Chicago started their domination right from the first inning when second baseman Jeff Baker reached at first base on an error committed by the Mets’ shortstop Jose Reyes, scoring Reed Johnson for the lead off run.
After this inning they struggled against the Mets’ starter Chris Capuano, who then threw shut-out innings until the fifth. In the fifth, Johnson also became a part of the second run with his line drive into fielder’s choice to third. Geovany Soto scored
and Starlin Castro reached safely at second base on another error by Reyes.
Capuano again struck back and completed his seven innings allowing five hits and two runs with one earned run over his 95 pitches. He also struck-out six batters. However, as soon as he handed the ball to relief pitcher Ryota Igarashi, Cubs’ Marlon Byrd
blistered to deep-left for a double allowing DJ LeMahieu to score the third run in the top of the eighth inning.
Until then, the Cubs’ starter Randy Wells had restricted the Mets to no-score with his unplayable fastballs and perfect changeups. Randy allowed only four hits before entering into the bottom of the eighth, but he allowed four game changing runs to the Mets
in the inning.
Before the eighth, the Cubs’ were on top but as soon as the Mets finalised the eighth inning at 4-3, their bullpen suddenly sunk to their seats. However, things changed in the ninth.
Pinch hitter Bryan LaHair drove to deep left-field and allowed runners to steal second and third base. The options were open for the Cubs but the Mets’ closer Bobby Parnell punched two outs before Aaron Ramirez entered the plate for his fifth at-bat. With
two bases loaded, Ramirez singled to right-field and got Montanez and pinch-runner Tyler Colvin to score runs.
"The one thing that enters my mind is I didn't want to put Bobby in that: He can't miss, I've got to throw that ball over the plate," Mets’ manager Terry Collins said.
Cubs’ reliever Kerry Wood got his third win of the season despite allowing two runs on three hits off one inning. With the Cubs in a 5-4 leading position, closer Carlos Marmol tossed some perfect pitching and struck-out two batters to get his 34th
win of the season.
It was the Cubs’ 63rd win while the Mets lost their 74th outing. Both teams are far below the League leaders. Cubs and Mets will meet for their final game tomorrow on Saturday at the same venue but with different pitchers.
