Chicago Cubs defeat New York Yankees 3-1 – MLB Update
The American League’s Chicago Cubs overpowered the New York Yankees 3-1 in the first of the three-game series at Wrigley Field, Illinois on Friday, June 17.
After getting a strong win over the AL Leaders, the struggling Cubs, who until now have lost 40 games in this season, will now have some confidence for the rest of the season. The Cubs’ manager Mike Quade found what he was hoping for last few months.
He said, "The biggest crowd of the year, but the best crowd. These two cities are so well represented. It was better than the Boston series for me. I know I'm home and all the rest of it, but the electricity was something special."
The Cubs’ starter Doug Davis had an exceptional day with the ball, as he did not let allow a single run in his first seven innings. He gave up his first run in the eighth inning when Mark Teixeira drove in an RBI single to centre-field. After this single,
Davis handed the ball to reliever Sean Marshall, who completed this inning without allowing any run.
Davis threw just over seven innings, allowed one run on three hits walked three and got four strike-outs to earn his maiden win of the season. He tossed 62 strikes off 111 pitches to make some positive change in his record. He now has a 1-5 with a 4.95 ERA.
"The main thing I've been struggling with is walks," said Davis. "That's something I definitely wanted to fix today. I'm happy with the way I threw and happy I got my first win out of the way as a Cub."
While Davis held the Yankees’ strong batting line-up to no-score, the batters scored two early runs in the first inning. Starlin Castro and Aramis Ramirez each touched an RBI single against the Yankees’ starter Freddy Garcia, who is struggling in this season.
In the third inning, Ramirez scored another RBI single against Garcia.
However, Garcia struck-back and remained scoreless in his later innings. He completed his seven innings with three allowed runs on six hits, two walks and three strike-outs but lost his sixth game of the season.
His closer Luis Ayala tossed a perfect ninth inning but could not take the game back into his side because some unplayable pitches of the Cubs’ closer, Carlos Marmol. He allowed just one hit and one walk while striking-out three batters in just over one
inning for his 14th save of the season.
