Chicago Cubs defeat Pittsburgh Pirates 11-6 - MLB Update

Chicago Cubs’ batters had an impressive day with the bat as they struck six homers with 21 hits to give their team a convincing 11-6 victory against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park, Pittsburgh on August 2.
Both teams started their scoring runs from the very first inning as the Cubs scored one run while the Pirates added two runs to their score-card and led off with 2-1, at the bottom of the first inning. Aramis Ramirez singled off left-field, Starlin Castro
stole a single run and Darwin Barney moved to second base at the top of the first inning.
On the other side, Garrett Jones hit a two-run homer towards centre-field and Andrew McCutchen scored a single run to give the Pirates a temporary lead. But the Cubs blasted four runs during the second inning to get a 5-2 lead. Tyler Colvin homered to right-field,
Ramirez hit a solo homer to centre-field while Randy Wells and Barney posted two collective runs to end the four-run second inning.
In the third inning, the Cubs raised their lead 8-2 by smashing three runs. Geovany Soto struck a two-run homer to centre-field and Marlon Byrd contributed a single run. Alfonso Soriano homered towards left-field to complete a three-run campaign for the
Cubs.
During the fourth inning, the Cubs took their lead 10-2 when Byrd and Soriano both homered to left-field. In the fifth and sixth inning, the pitchers lifted the momentum of their teams by striking-out the batters with an impressive pitching. Wells was little
bit shaky with the ball as he permitted two earned runs on five hits and pitched six innings with an ERA of 5.89. He permitted only one walk to the Pirates and struck-out seven batters on his 109 pitches.
Colvin scored one run on the single-run shot of Castro towards centre-field to give the Cubs an 11-2 lead at the top of the seventh inning. The Pirates added three runs in the eighth inning to reduce their lead 11-5. Jones hit his second homer of the game
towards right-field while Brandon Wood homered to left-field and Neil Walker posted a single run.
The last run for the Pirates was taken by Michael McKenry when Jones hit a sacrifice fly towards centre-field to cut their deficit 11-6 at the end of the ninth inning. With this second consecutive win, the Cubs got a 2-0 lead in the four-game series.
