Chicago Cubs defeat Pittsburgh Pirates 6-3 – MLB Update
The Chicago Cubs bagged a consolation win to avoid a series sweep at the hands of Pittsburgh Pirates as Randy Wells pitched the former to a convincing 6-3 victory in the third game of the three-game series at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois on Sunday,
September 4.
The Pirates prevailed in the first two games of the series but a composed team effort from the Cubs led them to their 60th win this season and 80 losses looming in their record this season. The Pirates, on the contrary, are an inch better than
the Cubs this season having won 64 games to counter their 76 losses.
Pittsburgh’s first baseman Derrek Lee improved his batting average to .407 for the season with a skilfully crafted RBI towards right field in the first inning, allowing Alex Presley to complete his run. The Cubs took control of the game thereon and the visitors
were not allowed a scoring chance until the eighth inning.
Wells showed his mettle from the mound as he pitched six perfect-innings to silence the Pirates. He allowed just one run amid seven hits in his spell to see his ERA drop down to 4.86 for the season. Although he managed just two strike-outs in 114 pitches,
his variety and arm strength were commendable. Wells managed his seventh win of the season with just four losses thus far.
The Cubs showed signs of being a strong batting unit in the previous game when they accumulated five runs but were unlucky to miss out on a well-merited win. However, they went a step ahead in this game and produced five runs in four innings to earn their
first win after a three-game losing streak.
Tony Campana scored the first run for the Cubs in the third inning on a throwing error by Ronny Cedeno to level the score before Koyie Hill took the Cubs to a one-run lead in the fourth inning.
Aramis Ramirez starred for the Cubs with two quick-runs to take the home side to a comfortable four-run lead by the sixth inning. The Pirates countered when Neil Walker scored a two-run homer in the eighth inning but Carlos Pena quickly added his second
run in the same inning having earlier scored in the fifth inning.
The Pirates won the series 2-1.
