Chicago Cubs defeated 2-4 by Pittsburgh Pirates – MLB News
Chicago Cubs got defeated 2-4 by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the third game of their three-match regular series encounter on Thursday, May 23 at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.
With this win, the Pirates completed the sweep 3-0 and secured second position in the National League Central behind St. Louis Cardinals. Currently, their track record is quite good with 29-18 win-loss along
with .617 winning percentage.
"It's something fun, something to change things up a little bit during a long season. Plus, we've got to support our boys," said Pirates second baseman Neil Walker, a Pittsburgh-area native.
Pirates’ pitchers and hitters played very well during the entire game and gave no chance to the Cubs to bounce back in the game.
“We're playing good baseball and I don't think we've reached our ceiling yet, The pitching has been good all year but the hitting has kind of been up and down. The bats are eventually going to come around and
we should be even better when that happens," Andrew McCutchen.
Starting pitcher Jeanmar Gomez pitched 3.2 innings and allowed only one run on two hits. He allowed one earned run on 2.75 ERA. He struck out two and remained confident on the mound during the entire spell.
It was a team effort by the Pirates’ as their relief pitchers also performed wonderfully and helped their team end the series on a high note.
Vin Mazzaro pitched 2.1 innings and received only two hits. He showed true commitment on the mound as he remained consistent on his 2.50 ERA.
Relief pitcher Jose Contreras was also one of the key winning factors for the Pirates. He held the Cubs strong batting lineup with full force and never tried any looseners. He only received one run on one hit
and struck out one Cubs’ hitter.
On the other hand, the Cubs starter Edwin Jackson certainly disappointed with his outing. He pitched three innings and allowed four runs on six hits. He was too wayward on the mound as his ERA rose to blistering
high 6.11 which proved one of the losing factors for the Chicago Cubs.
