Chicago Cubs deny news of Carlos Marmol being traded – MLB News
On Friday, there were conflicting reports about the potential trade of the Chicago Cubs’ Carlos Marmol to the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for Dan Haren. The move was being seen as one of the biggest that the Cubs were to make.
While Marmol was said to have confirmed the report, it was the Cubs who came with the denial. Sources, speaking to different news outlets, including MLB.com, said the Cubs had actually pulled the deal off the table.
Earlier, when Carlos Marmol himself confirmed the news, it was more of a big surprise for many. "I like Anaheim," Marmol told El Caribe. "They have talent, and they'll give me an opportunity. I'm grateful to Chicago."
Haren, who was supposed to be the part of trade – coming to the Cubs, tossed just over 176 innings this year. He ended up in the disabled list and could not complete 200 innings, something that he had never missed in his career.
At a time when the Chicago Cubs are looking for pitchers, at least two of them for the rotation, this move was likely to give them an advantage.
With Paul Maholm and Ryan Dempster gone, being the experienced pitchers, the Cubs’ search for the starters may see some intensification in the days to come. The offseason brings them an opportunity to have the pitchers for their rotation.
Carlos Marmol, nonetheless, has remained an important part of the Chicago Cubs bullpen. In a year which saw the club lose more than 100 of its games, Marmol had no less than 20 saves to his credit, something that was extraordinary given the team’s overall performance. He appeared in 61 games and had 3.42 ERA in 55.1 innings that he pitched.
Be that as it may, the Cubs will be looking to find the right set of pitchers for the coming season in order to avoid the prospects of what happened this year in terms of their performance.
Earlier, general manager Jed Hoyer had vowed to remain aggressive in free agency this year, being not limited and hindered by any contract.
