Chicago Cubs designate Casey Coleman for assignment – MLB News
After the Chicago Cubs signed a one-year contract with free-agent pitcher Scott Feldman, right-hander Casey Coleman was designated for assignment on Wednesday, November 28, to make room on the 40-man roster for the former.
Designating Coleman might not have come as a surprise to many given the fact that he was sent back to Triple-A Iowa the past season after he had 17 starts for the Chicago Cubs. In his 17 appearances, Coleman posted 7.40 ERA, prompting the Cubs move.
Not only that, Coleman also ended up on the disabled list in Iowa with a right shoulder strain back in August.
With Scott Feldman in the Cubs, nonetheless, things seem to be moving to right direction now. The Cubs had to fill the rotation in the offseason so as to assess things accordingly in Spring Training.
Earlier this month, it was Scott Baker whom the Cubs signed a one-year contract with. Feldman was the second this month to come to rotation.
"We felt like we had to add at least two starting pitchers as we went into the winter," Cubs' general manager Jed Hoyer said Tuesday. "We will continue to look for talent. If that talent is in the rotation then we wouldn't consider ourselves done. We would certainly add someone else."
Nonetheless, the pitchers in the rotation have to prove they are the right choices at this point in time. The Cubs, after all, had a season wherein they lost 101 games out of 162. This past season, pitching was one of the weaklings for the club.
With Jeff Samardzija, Matt Garza, Travis Wood, Scott Baker and Scott Feldman in the rotation now, the Cubs have a strong combination – having both experience and force to reverse the tide for them.
The last two contracts were moderately priced. It goes without saying that the Cubs hope the moves pay them well when it comes to the performance of the pitchers. In re-building phase, the aforementioned pitchers seem a good choice to make.
Jed Hoyer had this to say about the move, "We are excited about the two guys we have added, and we believe they will provide a lot of quality innings for us.”
It will be interesting to see what different moves the Cubs take during the offseason as they prepare for the next regular season.
