Chicago Cubs edge San Francisco Giants 6-4 – MLB Update
Chicago Cubs used their home conditions brilliantly as they edged the San Francisco Giants 6-4 at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois on Friday, August 31 in the opening game of their three match series.
The match was played on a very competitive note as both sides fought hard for superiority. Cubs handled their nerves superbly to outplay their opponents in finer details of the game, taking a crucial 1-0 series lead.
Cubs’ starting pitcher Chris Volstad played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash as he gave up just two runs on five hits in five plus innings for his second win of the season. Volstad has been unable to live up to expectations this season. An
impressive win against the Giants will certainly boost his confidence levels.
"I felt pretty good today starting out, but the weather kinda took a little bit on me as the game kept going on," Volstad said. "I think it really did help my sinker though, as it was down and it was moving."
Alfonso Soriano displayed some top quality hitting skills as he singled to left in the first to put Cubs on the board. He also homered in the third to extend the lead 5-0. Anthony Rizzo smacked a home-run to left centre in the fifth to keep Giants on the
defensive.
"You play indoors in AC, come in at 3, 3:30 in the morning," manager Bruce Bochy said. "And it's not just the heat, it's how humid it is out there. It's a tough day. Guys were battling back. Fighting back and get the tying run up there. Just couldn't quite
get it done."
The running season has turned out to be a big disappointment for the Cubs. Despite having some of the best pitchers and hitters in their squad, they have not been able to get the job done. However, the Cubs can still regroup themselves and come up with better
tactics for the next season.
Giants, on the other hand, will be disappointed with their effort in the opener. Nonetheless, they are placed first on the National League West standings and it will be interesting to see if they can regroup themselves in Game 2 to level the series.
