The Chicago Cubs will have their first Cactus League game on Sunday, March 4 to formally begin the season this year. While there are some essential things that the club wants to focus, base-running remains at the top of the list.
This was something that could be seen on Sunday.
"[First-base coach Dave McKay] was like, 'Focus on balls in the dirt,'" DeJesus said. "[He said], 'Once the ball is in the dirt, get in the shuffle and go.' We both had good jumps on it, but [Suzuki] picked them both. We were working on something there.
Kurt is a quality catcher. It was a great job by him."
Chicago Cubs are entering this season with a renewed hope that they will overcome the hurdles they are encountering for years now. The past season was a fiasco at best, if not downright disaster as they lost over 90 games.
However, the Cactus League’s beginning on Sunday, March 4, will begin a new chapter in the team’s evolving history. With the arrival of Dale Sveum, a competent and thoroughly professional coach who was previously associated with the Milwaukee Brewers as
hitting coach, the Cubs intend to storm into season with a rapturous start.
This was visible when the players descended on the ballpark on Sunday. The base-running remained as good as the team had hoped it to be.
Whatever the result of the game on Sunday, the team manager seems okay with the efforts of the players for now as the regular season is a month away.
"I was pleased with the effort," Sveum said. "Guys ran balls out, ran routine fly balls out. As far as everything went today, besides the score and a couple little hiccups, everything went real well."
The Cubs certainly have to prove their resilience and worth as a strong team in the Major League Baseball. The change that it has recently witnessed, the fans hope, will translate into success once the season kicks off.
From the base-running to hitting and pitching, everything is of great importance. Only through improvement in all the aspects of the game can the team hope to prevail.
