Chicago Cubs focused on re-building efforts – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs’ president baseball operations stated on Tuesday, January 31, that his focus right now is on a re-building effort coupled with balancing. Theo Epstein who is in Boston these days spoke at length about the past experience and future strategy
that he wants to implement.
Asked if the Chicago Cubs needed big names, he commented that there always remains a pressure to have big names to win every year.
"At some point, there's sort of a lot of pressure to have big names or to win every single year, which is not part of the small-market mentality," Epstein said. "It's usually more of a building effort an understanding. It's more of a balancing, a need to
take a small step back to ensure a better long-term future.”
Bolstering the team and instilling a winning spirit is the aim of Theo Epstein who has the experience of watching over a winning club like the Boston Red Sox. However, he admits that one never accomplishes what one always wants to.
Interestingly, Theo Epstein has not only led the big sides but he has had the opportunity to watch over the San Diego Padres. They are a relatively younger and smaller side compared to the Boston Red Sox. Thus, he is well aware of both big and small markets.
“You fight that fight for a while in a big market, I think when you're at your best, you fight it successfully. Sometimes the sheer force of being a big market kind of takes over. But, it is what it is.”
Big markets, in his view, have tremendous resources, but that never comes without a pitfall. Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see how he goes about in the re-building efforts for the Chicago Cubs.
The club has not won any major title for a very long time now. This lack of success is a major hurdle that Epstein is currently working hard to fix. However, with the arrival of Theo Epstein and subsequent changes that came in the front office, there is
a likelihood of the team’s potential in the upcoming 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
