Chicago Cubs formally start their search for a new manager – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs will formally start their search for the team’s manager from Friday, November 11 when they will interview Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin. This comes at the wake of Mike Quade’s dismissal whose stint with the Cubs turned out to be a fiasco
with more than 90 defeats in the regular season.
According to the news, the Chicago Cubs general manager, Jed Hoyer and the president baseball operations, Theo Epstein will call on Mackanin. Also, importantly, the Cubs have formally requested the Texas Rangers for permission to talk to pitching coach Mike
Maddux.
For Maddux, the news was unbelievable. The fact that both the Chicago Cubs and the Boston Red Sox have expressed their intention to speak to him, if not hire him, is a news that fills him with humbleness.
"I'm humbled to find how highly some organizations feel about me," Maddux said in an e-mail. "It's come upon our family and me quickly."
Maddux has the distinction of representing 10 teams in the career that spanned 15-years. Also, he has had the record of having served the Milwaukee Brewers for six seasons.
What adds to his credential is the slot that he had as the pitching coach for the Texas Rangers, a team that qualified for the World Series, but lost it to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Theo Epstein took the occasion to shed light on why it was necessary for him to work with a new manager.
"I think for my growth as an executive, maybe it's the right thing to work with a new manager; maybe for Tito's growth as a manager, it's better to work with a new boss," Epstein said. "As I mentioned when I left Boston, you don't want to live in the past.”
With the list of candidates already making their way into print and electronic media and Epstein’s revelation about the potential candidates, it remains to be seen who will ultimately find a slot in the Chicago Cubs. The club will be looking for someone
to guide them to a successful 2012 season.
