Chicago Cubs get last minute victory against Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 - MLB Update
In a game that could’ve tipped in either teams favour, the Philadelphia Phillies lost to the Chicago Cubs 4-3 in the first of the four game series at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on June 9.
The game that lasted over four hours suffered from an hour plus delay due to the rain and extra innings were used to break the tie. The game could have ended in the ninth inning when Tyler Colvin belted out a home-run, but due to a fans interference with
the ball, the umpires changed the call to a double after Phillies’ manager Charlie Manuel came and protested.
Colvin accepted the umpire’s verdict and said, “I didn’t see the replay until the next inning, you know, I agree it was a double. It’s one of those things we got the replay, they got it right and that’s the way it is.”
Even though that did not work out for the Cubs, they still managed to win the game when the 11th inning rolled around. After suffering eight back-to-back defeats, the Cubs have improved their game given that this is their second consecutive win.
As for the Phillies, things just did not turn out well for them. The team that is leading the National League East and has been at the top of Power Rankings for quite some time could not pull through at the end. When the game kicked off, Jimmy Rollins unleashed
his three run homer that covered a distance of 376 feet, as it looked like the Phillies would be taking home the win, but unfortunately for them the opposite happened.
Kyle Kendrick was pitching from Philadelphia’s side, as Kendrick was filling in for Joe Blanton who is currently injured. Although a good pitcher, Kyle is not comparable to the other Four Aces of Philadelphia that boast of Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt
and Cole Hamels. In his fourth start of the season, Kendrick allowed two hits to pass him in the three innings that he pitched, as the Cubs batters remained scoreless against him.
The only runs that the Phillies managed to put up throughout the entire duration of the game came in the second inning where Rollins homered and Raul Ibanez along with Dane Sardinha scored. It turned out to be just another game that highlighted the sorry
state of the Phillies’ offense.
The Cubs got their first run in the sixth inning when Starlin Castro singled and Darvin Barney scored. The seventh inning remained scoreless, but the Cubs managed to score in the eighth, ninth and eleventh inning. Castro scored, Geovany Soto belted out a
home-run and Colvin belted out the tie breaker.
