Chicago Cubs hammered by Pittsburgh Pirates 0-3 – MLB Recap
Chicago Cubs hammered by the Pittsburgh Pirates 0-3 in the fourth and final game of their four-match regular series encounter on Monday, September 17 at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
"You can argue this is the best game he's pitched all year -- the length, the efficiency, a couple double plays, a couple minor jams he worked right through and out of, Very good command. It was the start we needed, a very good outing by Kevin," Pirates' manager Clint Hurdle said later in the game.
Pirates’ starter Kevin Correia pitched tremendously and showed his true class with enormous energy. He tossed seven innings and did not allow any run. He allowed two hits and struck-out six on his 4.09 ERA.
“In a game that starts at 10:40, the hitters are going to be aggressive, It's not going to be a game where you take a lot of pitches, so if you can pound the zone with quality pitches, you're going to have a decent outing usually," Correia said on his performance which remained consistent during his entire spell.
With this win, the Pirates also saved the series and levelled it 2-2 while both teams now prepare for a potential push towards a post-season qualification.
Not only starter Correia, but the Pirates’ entire roster played well and earned a well fought victory. They played as one unit and rattled the Cubs with a three-run advantage.
Left fielder Starling Marte did well on the plate as he scored one run and smashed one hit along with two RBIs on his five at-bats. He was also exceptional with his consistent .444 slugging percentage.
Jose Tabata also did well as he ran for an RBI on his four at-bats along with two hits and maintained his .352 slugging percentage.
On the other hand, the Cubs’ entire roster did not play well and could not save the game. Especially their starter Travis Wood was hammered with big hits as he received three runs and four hits on his 5.2 innings. He struck-out nine Pirates’ potential batters but still his ERA rose to 4.25.
