Chicago Cubs hammered by Washington Nationals 1-9 – MLB Recap
The Chicago Cubs were hammered by the Washington Nationals 1-9 in the third game of their four match regular series encounter on Wednesday, September 5 at Nationals Park in Washington.
Cubs’ entire pitching rotation played poorly and lost the game with disgrace.
"Good teams take nothing for granted, Guys down at the bottom, sometimes they have more energy and more to prove than guys at the top. We've been down there enough. We know what it's like, we're not letting up," Washington manager Davey Johnson said
Starter Chris Volstad pitched five innings and received five runs and nine hits. He literally spoiled the game and did not give any chance to the Cubs’ to bounce back in the game.
His way-ward pitching proved disastrous for the Cubs as they could not hold onto their natural aggressive play and suffered a heavy defeat.
Cubs’ starter also received three homers and could not maintain his 6.23 ERA. He struck-out only two and just failed to deliver his best game.
Relief pitcher Michael Bowden also played poorly. He pitched one inning and received one run and one hit on his 4.56 ERA.
Striking-out only one batter, he also remained under pressure and lost the game for the Cubs.
Closer Blake Parker pitched 0.1 innings and received three runs and three hits on his blistering 6.00 ERA.
"I just didn't appreciate him eyeballing our dugout for absolutely no reason at all, I just don't think that's right when you're looking in our dugout for no apparent reason at all," Manager Dale Sveum said.
On the other hand, the Nationals' pitchers played beautifully and earned a decent victory against the Cubs.
They all remained focus and did not allow the Cubs’ batters to attack them which automatically worked out for the Nationals as they ease past their opponents in style.
"We're playing such great baseball, it's selfish of me to think of myself, Individual stuff is nice, but all said and done it's a team thing," Gonzalez said.
Gio Gonzalez pitched seven innings and did not receive any run. He allowed three hits and maintained his ERA at 2.98. He retired nine Cubs’ batters and proved one of the winning factors for the Nationals.
