Chicago Cubs hitting coach James Rowson comes up with new drill for the team – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs’ hitters on Saturday, June 16, were seen engaged in rigorous practicing session as the new hitting coach took the charge. James Rowson, who is the new hitting coach of the Cubs, bears a lot of responsibilities given the unsatisfying performance of the team offensively.
Saturday saw several of the players working out as the Cubs prepare to take on the relatively stronger teams in the league. Those who took part in the practice session included Darwin Barney, Welington Castillo and David DeJesus.
It goes without saying that the rigour involved, coupled with technical nuances of the practicing session, will be remunerating for the players. This comes at the wake of incredibly lacklustre show of the hitters lately.
Flipping the ball to the batters from a short distance, Rowson wanted the hitters to keep the swing compact. From the outlook, the effort has not gone in vain.
"It's something the guys wanted to work on a little today," said Rowson, who has now taken the charge of hitting as the Cubs decided to dismiss Rudy Jaramillo. "It's really soft toss, and the net is there to make sure they keep their swing compact."
While Rowson was doing his bit, making sure that his endeavour remains fruitful for the team as a whole, the team manager Dale Sveum shed some light on this. For him, the practice session is aimed at keeping the bat in strike zone, and keep connected with the lower half while swinging the bat.
"It's a drill to keep the bat in the strike zone longer and keep connected with your lower half when you swing the bat and not shutting down your backside," Sveum said. "It keeps you fluid through the baseball, knowing your bat can't get too far out of the strike zone.”
Rowson, it is worth mentioning here, comes up with an experience; something that he can proudly present if he is asked to furnish his credentials. Having previously remained the hitting coordinator for Cubs’ Minor League, he knows a lot of hitters well, and – obviously, how to bring further improvement in them.
