Chicago Cubs humiliate the New York Mets 11-1 – MLB Update
Chicago Cubs left the New York Mets’ defence in tatters on Tuesday, May 24 to win a comfortable 11-1 victory at Wrigley Field, Chicago.
Matt Garza who ended up on the disabled list for over two weeks with elbow stiffness paved the way for Luis Montanez who shone to embolden the Chicago Cubs’ offence. Ryan Dempster played his role with ball, rendering the Mets hitters unable to prove their
efficacy.
Tuesday’s game produced infallible evidence of the Cubs’ dominance against the Mets as Dempster threw seven innings and Starlin Castro had two RBIs, involving three hits.
After the scoreless first inning, Chicago laid down a strong foundation for winning the game in the second inning. Luis Montanez doubled to deep right, enabling Ramirez to score the first run for the Cubs. Koyie Hill scored the second run in the same inning
while Darwin Barney singled to right to make it 3-0.
If the Mets and Jonathon Niese thought the Cubs would spare them, they were mistaken. Starlin scored a two-run homer to make it 5-0 for the Cubs in the same inning. Niese gave up a total of five hits in the inning and five runs, which added one error as
well.
Inspired by the splendid performance of the offence, Dempster kept the Mets’ offence in check. The only run he allowed was in the fifth inning when Jose Reyes reached on infield single to score the first and only run for the Mets.
Niese, who was clearly losing in contrast to his Cubs’ rival, gave up two more hits in the fifth inning, allowing Castro to score another single which took the lead to 6-1 for the Cubs.
Taylor Buchholz who replaced Niese was thought to be effective. However, Chicago made it 7-1 when Reed Johnson struck swinging, allowing Hill to score. Buchholz gave up a total of two hits in the sixth inning while Dempster continued his glorious march,
allowing no opportunity to the Mets’ hitters.
This must have amused Dempster. "It was just nice for us," he said. "We scored some runs, we took advantage of a big error there, scored a bunch, like four runs after that. A good victory for us."
The seventh inning virtually dashed all the hopes of the Mets to make a come-back in the game when Buchholz was taken to task by the Cubs’ offence again.
Hill and Reed Johnson scored a single each, while Reed Johnson went for a massive strike, earning a two-run homer. The seventh inning, second of Buchholz was no less than a catastrophe for the Mets which saw four runs, three hits and an error, making it
11-1 for Chicago.
Jeff Samardzija pitched an effective ninth inning, allowing only hit, to seal the 11-1 victory to Chicago against the Mets.
