Chicago Cubs interested in former Washington Nationals Edwin Jackson, sources report-MLB Update
Former Washington Nationals’ starting pitcher, Edwin Jackson, can be assured that he will be signed soon. As per reports, the Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers are pursuing him in the free agent market.
It remains to be seen as to how much the Cubs are willing to pay him.
Naturally, they are not going to offer him more than beyond a particular extent, considering the fact he was below par during the last season.
Jackson did not have an ideal 2012 season while playing for the Nationals.
For a team that won Division title, he was largely an exception in the midst of the high quality pitchers present there.
Along with the likes of Jordan Zimmermann, Gio Gonzalez and Stephen Strasburg, his position in the team was that of someone, who is an only pitcher that can leak runs and provide the oppositions an opportunity to win games.
Sometimes, he performed well but on the whole he remained far away from the kind of dominance that the rest of the pitchers in the team maintained.
Against this backdrop, it is no wonder that Washington has not offered him contract extension so far. The Nationals have replaced him with Dan Haren.
Jackson will be aware of the fact why the Nationals have not approached him.
Instead of worrying about losing his spot, he will be looking to sign a new contract with some other team.
Certainly, the emergence of the Cubs as the contender for his acquisition will be satisfying for him. He can hope for being included in the rotation and given opportunities to rebound in the next season.
By winning a great number of matches during the 2013 season, he can set himself up for being valued highly from the next year onward.
Being shown least interest to by the organisation due to subpar performance in the season is a moment of disappointment for a player.
Jackson can have the opportunity to reassert his credentials as a quality major league pitcher and prove his critics wrong, if the Cubs sign him.
The next couple of days will be important for Jackson.
He will be hoping for being granted the desired contract. Let’s see which organisation he plays for during the 2013 season.
