Chicago Cubs lose to Philadelphia Phillies 7-8 – MLB Recap
The Chicago Cubs lost to Philadelphia Phillies 7-8 in the second game of their two-match regular series encounter on Thursday, May 17 at Wrigley Field, Chicago in 2012 Major League Baseball season.
With this win, the Phillies have also taken the series 2-0 and are now looking forward to play their next three-game matchup against the Boston Red Sox from Friday, May 18.
Starter Roy Halladay played a key role for the Phillies win. He was exceptional in his eight innings as he gave only three runs, three earned runs and struck-out four Cubs’ batters.
"To put together five games and get ourselves at or above (.500) is important, I think sometimes when you start thinking about it too much, it's hard to put together a run like that. So now that we have it out of the way we can get to a point where we're not worrying about it." said Halladay.
Later Phillies manager Charlie Manuel also said for his team’s win and about their winning percentage, "It took us awhile to get back to .500, Now we have to stay there and move on."
Though overall the Phillies entire roster played well, but relief pitcher Jacob Diekman scared the manager Charlie Manuel when he gave an important four runs in just 0.2 innings. However, on the whole, the Phillies were better on the day regardless of the Cubs’ chasing them until the ninth.
The Cubs looked good when they arrived on the field, but soon their starter Chris Volstad was hit for four runs in his short spell of 2.0 innings.
"I know it's in there -- it's just a matter of tapping into it and finding it at this point, I've done it before.” said Volstad.
Though the Cubs called Blake Parker shortly after Coleman finished his four innings, but Parker also waivered and gave too many slow pitches which were easily picked by the Phillies batting lineup and gave them humiliating defeat in the end. He went with two hits and three runs.
This particular defeat has further decreased the Cubs winning percentage as now they are sitting at the bottom of the National League Central Division table.
