Chicago Cubs lose to Washington Nationals 2-1 – MLB Update
Chicago Cubs lost to Washington Nationals 2-1 at the Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois on Thursday, April 5 in their regular season encounter of the 2012 Major League Baseball.
Stephen Strasburg put up a brilliant show as he allowed just one run and five hits over seven innings pitched to help the Nationals take control over the contest. Only Marlon Byrd had an RBI single off Strasburg. Striking out five and walking, he played
a key role in deciding the outcome of the match. According to a source, Strasburg hit 98 mph in the sixth inning when he struck out Starlin Castro.
In a post game interview, Strasburg stated that he is thrilled to play at Wrigley Field, where several Hall of Famers have played.
Ian Desmond produced a match winning performance in hitting department of the game, driving in the go ahead run in the ninth and the Nationals clinched a thriller on Thursday night. For the Cubs, Ryan Dempster was the dominant force as he struck out 10 in
just over seven innings. He will be hoping give similar performance throughout the season to cement his place on Chicago’s big league roster.
Desmond looked very confident after leading his team to an impressive victory over the Cubs. The striker said that he had been waiting desperately for the regular season to start. He further added that the Nationals have the capacity to surprise even the
strongest teams in MLB.
The Cubs had their chances to put up a decent total on the board but they lacked in concentration and ultimately paid the price. The Cubs looked down and out during Spring Training and their fans will be expecting them to bounce back strongly.
"There are dozens and dozens and dozens of people -- the players first of all -- working extremely hard to bring this organization forward," Chicago Cubs Manager Theo Epstein said in a post game interview.
Their loss against the Nationals on Thursday certainly will not help their cause. It will be interesting to see if the Cubs can come up with the right tactics to change the course of their destiny.
