Chicago Cubs not looking at Ryne Sandberg as St. Louis Cardinals considering him – MLB News
Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg is not among the list of candidates that the Chicago Cubs are looking for team manager for the 2012 season. Sandberg was informed of the decision on Wednesday, November 2 on phone.
Ryne Sandberg is a Hall of Fame second baseman. The 52-year-old is serving the Philadelphia Phillies’ Triple-A Leigh Valley for a quite some time now.
The Chicago Cubs newly appointed president of baseball operations informed the Hall of Famer of the decision at a time when Mike Quade was dismissed. Having managed five seasons in the Minor Leagues, Sandberg was apparently a strong candidate for the slot.
Nonetheless, Sandberg maintained his characteristic poise and thanked Theo Epstein for calling him and intimating him of the Cubs’ decision. The two had previously seen each other in the interview for the Red Sox when Theo was managing the team.
"He didn't owe me that at all," Sandberg told the Arlington Heights (Ill.) Daily Herald. "He didn't have to do that. It was a classy move, and I'm very appreciative of the phone call. In the end, I wished him and everybody there good luck."
Sandberg went a step ahead and asked the Chicago Cubs fans to have trust in the new management which he believes, is well-placed to put the team on the right path. Considering the fact that the Chicago Cubs have not won a World Series for over a century
now is a challenge that Theo has to capably manage.
However, Sandberg believes they can. "Cubs fans should have trust in Theo," Sandberg said. "They're in great hands with him and Jed [Hoyer] and Jason [McLeod].” Sandberg believes that the team is going in the right direction and the Cubs will ultimately
be where the team has to be with all their potential.
In related news, there has been quite a development on the Cardinals front which has asked the Philadelphia Phillies to speak to Ryne Sandberg. The Cardinals, it is learnt, are seriously considering his name to manage the 2011 World Series Champions as Tony
La Russa announced his retirement as the manager.
