Chicago Cubs not wanting to trade Matt Garza – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs do not apparently seem intent on trading Matt Garza, said news reports on Wednesday, January 11. There were reports that the Texas Rangers, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers had their eyes set on the player for a new
contract.
While the Chicago Cubs’ agenda for this week will essentially revolve around the meeting of the coaches and players’ meeting, as Matt Garza has generated quite a lot of discussions within the team’s circle and in the media.
There were earlier reports that the Chicago Cubs had intended to trade Garza, the 28-old-year pitcher, to any of the aforementioned teams. However, Theo Epstein, the team’s president of baseball operations, did not give much credence to this buzz.
"I can truly say more has happened in the media with this [than] reality," Epstein said. "There's no attempt to shop him."
"I'm hoping to talk to him this weekend [at the Cubs Convention]," Epstein said. "I've kept his representatives updated every step. But let's downplay this. This is really more what has happened in the media than what has happened in reality. There was no
attempt to shop him. This is not an everyday endeavor for us.”
Left with two years as an arbitration-eligible player, Matt Garza has made 5.9 last year. Having five years experience in his impressive credential, Garza started 31 games for the Chicago Cubs in 2011, having maintained 3.32 ERA.
He was ninth in the National League in strike-outs, which were 197 and had stood ninth in complete games. He pitched a total of 198 innings, allowing 90 runs with 10 wins to his credit and losing 10 of the games.
His career average is at 3.83 currently in the 152 games that he has appeared. With career strike-outs of 769, it remains to be seen what the future has to offer for this pitcher in the days to come. Much shall depend on the Chicago Cubs which indeed will
need the pitcher in the roster. It will be interesting to see where Garza ends up and what the Cubs will do to retain him for the upcoming 2012 season.
