Chicago Cubs officially name Dale Sveum as new manager – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs on Friday, November 18 officially named Dale Sveum their new manager of the club, a move that almost completes the hierarchy. Sveum was considered to be one of the strong and favourite candidates for the vacancy.
However, Friday’s press conference had a lot of compliments for the Sveum. Both the president of baseball operations for the Cubs, Theo Epstein and the general manager Jed Hoyer, discussed the role of Sveum and his positive qualities that will hopefully
help the Cubs to a winning season.
Having previously served the Milwaukee Brewers as the hitting coach, helping the club get into the post-season with highly impressive record, Sveum made an impression on his interviewers as well.
"Dale provided extremely well-thought-out answers to nuanced baseball questions instantaneously, answer after answer after answer," Epstein said. "We came up for air and took a break and [Hoyer and I] looked at each other and said, 'Wow.'”
He is now the 52nd manager of the Chicago Cubs, officially taking charge after Mike Quade was dismissed early this month owing to one of the worst seasons the club had in recent years.
But Friday’s press conference put other aspects of Sveum in front of those who had previously not known the insight of the game this manager has. Hoyer was of the view that he was not prepared for interview, but rather for managerial responsibility.
Epstein also discussed Sveum and highlighted his successful career, which the Cubs are hoping will help them towards a winning season.
"It wasn't that he prepared for the interview," Epstein said, "but [Sveum] spent a lifetime as a very intelligent person observing the game with an open mind to come up with his own baseball philosophy on how to win, and it was very impressive."
The 47-year-old has a three year contract with the Chicago Cubs now, with an option for a fourth year. Of them, he has spent three decades in baseball, having served as Double-A manager in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ organisation.
The Cubs now look forward to Sveum’s stint as the new manager to not only lift the players but elevate the team.
