Chicago Cubs outclass Cincinnati Reds 7-4 – MLB Spring Training
Chicago Cubs displayed some high quality baseball skills as they outclassed Cincinnati Reds 7-4 at the Goodyear Ballpark in Goodyear, Arizona in their Cactus League encounter of the 2012 Major League Baseball Spring Training Session.
Reds’ pitcher Mat Latos looked in a lot of pain after he pulled up awkwardly. It was later revealed that Latos had strained his left calf while throwing a pitch in the fifth inning. The injury immediately forced him out of the game. The Reds will be very
concerned about his injury as they want him ready for the Opening day.
"It's better than (hurting) his knee," Reds’ manager Dusty Baker said. "The ground is hard. He kept hitting a hole out there. You could tell when he walked the pitcher that something's not right. He wanted to finish, but we said now's not the time. We have
too many guys going down. We thought caution was the best."
"I'm alive and fine," Latos said. "I just put a little ice on it. I'm fine. It was just a precaution."
For the Cubs, Matt Garza put up a fine show as he allowed just two runs over six innings pitched. He will be looking to make the most of on hand opportunities to help his team make it to the World Series finals.
The win will be of great importance for the Cubs who have now improved their spring win-loss record to 13-14. The Cubs received a great deal of criticism after they made a very shaky start to their Spring Training Campaign. However, they have shut their
critics by putting up strong numbers in the last few games.
It will be interesting to see if the Cubs can continue their excellent form during the regular season to reach the playoffs. The fans will also love to see their team surprise their opponents in National League Central division.
The Reds, on the other hand, will be disappointed with their ordinary effort. With just ten wins in their 26 games this spring, the Reds will have to reconsider their game plan if they want to achieve better results in the upcoming regular season.
