Chicago Cubs overpower the struggling New York Mets 10-6 – MLB Update
Carlos Pena went for brilliant go-ahead single on Sunday, September 11, to help the Chicago Cubs beat the New York Mets 10-6 at Citi Field. The game that saw an increasingly tough competition over the favourable end result for any team was dominated by the
Cubs in the 11th to score the victory.
The Cubs, however, held their grip to win the series after they had lost the first game by 5-4.
The game also marked the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 incident. "It was a little bit different today. Obviously, you could tell the atmosphere was a little bit different. But I think most of us have played in emotional games or seesaw games before,"
Bay said.
Chicago started the game with Carlos Pena’s single in the very first inning against Miguel Batista. The 2-hit one-run first inning was followed by a quick single of Angel Pagan who doubled to right to level the score.
Tyler Colvin scored a two-run single to right-centre to give the Cubs an edge in the game as Garza pitched a scoreless third inning. Tyler Colvin had another single in the top of the fifth to take the lead to 4-1 for the Chicago Cubs with Garza throwing
another scoreless inning.
However, as the sixth inning kicked off, Nick Evans and Ronny Paulino scored a single each to bring the Cubs lead down to 4-3. With the game initially in the Cubs’ grip, it was now the New York Mets whose resurgent hitter Justin Turner scored a single in
the eighth to level the score.
As the game leveled, Manny Acosta pitched a scoreless 9th for the Mets while James Russell pitched a scoreless 10th. Josh Stinson, however, was in for a big surprise once he came to pitch the 11th for the Mets.
Carlos Pena was first to single to left-centre to score the tiebreaking run for the Cubs, Alfonso Soriano had a two-run double while Darwin Barney also had a two run double to take the score to 9-4 following a single of Geovany Soto that gave the Cubs a
10-4 lead.
Even then the Cubs’ manager thought they were not confronting an easily winnable rival. "We don't do things the easy way, that's for sure," Cubs’ manager Mike Quade said. "They kept playing, they kept battling."
With John Grabow pitching the last inning, Jason Pridie of the Mets homered to bring down the lead to 10-6. However, the Mets could not carry it forward as Grabow sent other hitters packing to wrap up the game with a 10-6 win. The Cubs’ put in a brilliant
performance and got a much needed win over the struggling New York Mets.
