Chicago Cubs plan to add depth with the approach of the offseason – MLB News
Chicago Cubs' general manager Jed Hoyer said on Wednesday, September 26, that the club intends to add depth, replenishing the roster with the approach of the offseason. With the regular season nearing end, the Cubs are planning new moves for the future.
The changes needed come after the club had decided to trade Paul Maholm and Ryan Dempster, two of the veteran pitchers for the Cubs. With their exit, the Cubs seem short of the depth they need and are looking for.
"We certainly need to add a lot of depth over the course of the winter," Cubs' general manager Jed Hoyer said Wednesday. "We traded Paul [Maholm] and Ryan [Dempster] and we have to replace those guys going forward."
Matt Garza, it is pertinent to remember, has not pitched since July 21 after he was shut-down as he made 18 starts. Hoyer stated that the club will assess everything regarding that pitcher afterwards.
"We're certainly hopeful that he's 100 percent but we won't be able to assess that until later on," Hoyer said.
While their depth is an issue that the Cubs intend to deal with, swinging is what the Cubs want to execute well this season. Cubs' batters have performed generally well with the combination of veteran and young players.
Starlin Castro is one of them, batting .326 this month, and carrying .283 since the start of the season. Castro is focusing on having a strong finish, most preferably with .300 mark.
“I think about finishing strong," the Cubs' shortstop said. "There are eight games left, and I just want to finish strong and be close like last year. Last year, I hit .307. I'll feel good if I hit .295 this year."
The team which is in building phase has seen spectacular individual and team performances this year. This bodes well for the Cubs after the changes they have gone through all this while. It will be interesting to see how the Cubs make the most of the changes that have recently come, especially when it comes to being in one of the most competitive Divisions of the National League.
