Chicago Cubs prevail 10-6 in thriller against New York Mets – MLB Update
The Chicago Cubs showed excellent composure in the 11th inning to win 10-6 against the New York Mets on Sunday, September 11 at Citi Field in New York in what was nothing less than a thriller.
With scores level at 4-4, the Cubs sensibly scored six runs in the decider to complete a much-needed 2-1 series win over the Mets. They had been struggling on the road games this season but a series win assured them that they still have the ability to perform
in varying conditions.
The Mets used a record nine pitchers over 11 innings but neither was able to halt the flow of runs in the last inning. Miguel Batista started well for the home side but could not stop runs from flowing in at regular intervals. He was charged for four runs
in five innings but could strike-out only one batter in his spell to see his ERA surge to 4.27 for the season.
It was Josh Stinson, however, who lost the game for the Mets, leaking four runs over just 15 pitches and giving an advantage to the Cubs at a crucial stage. Ryota Igarashi replaced Stinson on the mound but failed to restrict the visitors as they added two
more over the next 15 pitches to seal the encounter.
The Mets did reply to the battering through a two-run homer in the bottom of the 11th, helped by Jason Pridie’s strong arms, as he drove in two runs in two at-bats to keep the Mets in contention but the failure of other batters did not help his
cause.
Ramon Ortiz showed patience at the mound for the Cubs to win his first game of the season. He did well to restrict the Mets in his spell of 0.2 innings, allowing just one walk to keep the pressure on the home side. John Grabow, however, pitched in the 11th
inning for the Cubs and was smashed for a two-run home-run but the batters had given him a sufficient margin to take the Cubs safely through.
Bryan LaHair and Carlos Pena starred for the Cubs, going 3-for-4 and 3-for-5 respectively. The Cubs will now want to inject young blood to make a more consistent line-up around these two players.
