Chicago Cubs revive late in the game to defeat Atlanta Braves 6-5 – MLB Update
The Chicago Cubs silenced the Atlanta Braves 6-5 after a late comeback at Turner Field in Atlanta, Georgia on Sunday, August 14.
Cubs faced a four-run deficit till the fifth inning but then a four-run sixth inning followed by a two-run effort in the seventh inning sealed the game for the Cubs which could have been an easy in for the Braves. The Cubs did not allow a single hit to the
Braves after the sixth inning in what was an epic display of pitching by the relief pitchers.
The Braves started the game strongly scoring three quick-runs over the first two innings to take an early lead over the struggling Cubs.
Michael Bourn added the first run for the Braves helped by Dan Uggla’s sacrifice fly hit to the left before Alex Gonzalez and Jose Constanza added a run each in the second inning. Constanza replicated his effort in the fourth inning to set a four-run lead
for the Braves.
Braves’ second baseman Uggla saw his record hitting-streak being scrapped in this game. His hitting-streak stretched over 33 games. "That's more games than I thought I would ever have," Uggla said.
Matt Garza was not in form for the Cubs as he went for four runs in the five innings that he pitched. Although he struck-out five batters, his pitching lacked precision. John Grabow replaced him for the sixth inning and won the game with his top-quality
pitching. This victory improved his tally of wins to three without a single loss as till now.
Chicago’s relief pitchers were convincing as well. Jeff Samardzija and Sean Marshall held their 11th and 25th game respectively while Carlos Marmol saved his 28th game after an excellent performance in the ninth inning. The
pitchers gave the Astros no chance of coming back after a decent start.
Jonny Venters and Craig Kimbrel have been outstanding this season, pitching deep in the game, but their performance was not enough to lift the Braves after Eric O’Flaherty had already lost it in the seventh inning when Carlos Pena hammered him for a two-run
home-run.
The Cubs won the three-game series 2-1 and have now registered 11 wins in their previous 14 encounters.
