Chicago Cubs search for a new manager comes to an end – MLB News
The race between two clubs has ended, as the Milwaukee Brewers’ hitting coach Dale Sveum has agreed to be the next manager for the Chicago Cubs. Despite talks with the Boston Red Sox front office staff two times in last three weeks, Sveum decided to serve
with the Cubs as a manager.
On Thursday, Sveum confirmed to be the new manager of the Cubs, which was one of the two clubs, interviewing him in last two weeks to fill their vacant position. Sveum will officially announce it on Friday morning at Wrigley Field to succeed Mike Quade,
who was fired after a humiliating 71-91 season, extending the Cubs notorious performance to 103 seasons.
The exact length of the contract has not been officially disclosed yet, but sources reported that the deal was expected to be for three years.
Sveum had support from a player, who has been under Sveum in 2001 to 2003 at Double-A Altoona, John Grabow stated that Sveum is good to be a manager, as he has popularity to work really hard with the hitters.
Grabow commented that Sveum was more inclined towards the strong batting department as he was the hitting coach for the Brewers. Grabow added that Sveum used to come to the field on a daily basis to work with the hitters.
The player went to state that Sveum possessed excellent communication skills that will definitely help the Cubs.
"He's the kind of guy who can talk to players, not be their best friend, but get to know them and what they're feeling," Grabow said.
Sveum was in line for the job with the Texas Rangers’ pitching Coach Mike Maddux, Cleveland Indians’ bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr. and Philadelphia Phillies’ bench coach Pete Mackanin. All of them were also in competition for the Boston Red Sox empty place,
after Terry Francona left the club after the September–Disaster which occurred during the regular season.
Dale had been on the managerial job for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2008 after Ned Yost’s termination. He also served in the Boston Red Sox as a third base coach when Theo Epstein was the general manager. The Red Sox interviewed Sveum after Francona left the
club and Theo Epstein left the club to join the Cubs as a president of baseball operations. Yesterday, he had dinner with the Red Sox front office, but nothing was confirmed.
