Chicago Cubs’ shortstop prospect Javier Baez working on offence—MLB News
The Chicago Cubs shortstop prospect Javier Baez said on Monday, April 16, that he is actively working on his offence, and smoother swing. The young player is being tipped as one of the promising shortstops the Cubs have recently had.
"Right now, I'm working on my offense," said Baez, the club's first-round selection in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, No. 9 overall. "We are working to make my swing smoother and put me in a position that gives me more control. It's not just about swinging
as hard as you can."
With the talent that he possesses, the Cubs can try him even in the regular season. However, it cannot be said with certitude if the team is weighing that option right now since most of the prospects are sent to play in Dominican Summer League, Class A-Short-season
Boise, Arizona Rookie League or Class A Peoria.
In his senior year at Arlington Country Day School in Jacksonville, the player had hit .771 with no less than 22 homers to his credit and 20 doubles. With the performance that he had put there, the player was ranked No. 3 as the Cubs Top 20 Prospect list
came.
The Cubs minor system is flourishing well at this point in time, promising a bright future for the club as more and more youngsters make their way into it with exceptional talent. The club's vice president of player personnel, Oneri Fleita believes providing
these players the right opportunity will be the first step to help them build careers.
"It's an opportunity to get quality instruction and work," said Oneri Fleita, while shedding light on Baez’s performance and the prospect for other young players. "With Baez, just like every player, we hope to develop a foundation and give them the opportunity
to learn and develop a routine every day. This is the first step in their careers."
As to how long will these players to make it to the big league, there are chances that they accomplish it within four to five years. With such talent available, the Cubs will be able to establish their dominance in the league in the future.
