Chicago Cubs sign Gerardo Concepcion – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs completed their 40-man roster on Sunday, March 11, by inducting Gerardo Concepcion, a potentially strong pitcher. Concepcion became another player on Sunday the Cubs signed for a five-year deal worth $6 million.
The development is significant considering the fact that Gerardo Concepcion has evinced sensational performance in his career that spans only a few years. The 20-year-old pitcher among other things, in 2011 has remained the Cuban National Series Rookie of
the Year.
As was expected, the Cubs had been looking for more depth in pitching. On Sunday, after the contract was signed, the Cubs’ general manager Jed Hoyer shed light on this. The team seems all excited to bring the pitcher in the 40-man roster.
"One of our focuses is to bring in more pitching depth," general manager Jed Hoyer said on Sunday. "He's a 20-year-old left-hander, has a really good feel for pitching, a three-pitch mix. He's had success at a young age in Cuba, and he's a guy we're excited
to bring over here and work with."
His winning percentage the past year remained second in Cuban National Series with an impressive 3.36 ERA, having won no less than 10 wins in 21 games whereby he lost only three. His ERA of 3.36 remained ninth in the CNS.
The young pitcher has demonstrated what it invariably takes for the novices to grab the attention of teams like the Chicago Cubs. That is what Hoyer admits too without attaching too many expectations from the young player.
“He had success early on there, and he's advanced when it comes to a feel for pitching," Hoyer said. "I don't want to put any expectations on him. Let's get him to the Minor Leagues, let him perform, and we'll figure that part out.”
Gerardo Concepcion may well get a chance to play in any of the upcoming Cactus League games. For now he will get his space in the Minor Leagues and the Cubs will look as to when the time is ripe to bring in the young player in Major League Baseball. It will
be exciting to see what type of impact Concepcion will have for the Cubs during the regular season.
