Chicago Cubs stun San Francisco Giants 7-0 in series starter – MLB Update
The Chicago cubs stunned the San Francisco Giants shutting them out 7-0 in the first outing of the three-game series at AT&T Park in San Francisco on Monday, August 29.
Cubs’ starter Randy Wells had an outstanding day with his gritty ball, as he struck-out seven batters over his full game pitching. He allowed only two hits and one walk over his 113 pitches spell. It was the fourth straight win for Wells. He has not lost
a game since August 7, when he dropped six runs in eight innings to lose his fourth outing of the season.
Tim Lincecum, on the other hand had one of the worst outings of his career. He allowed three home-runs and it is the first time the pitcher allowed these numbers in his entire career. The two time Cy Young Award winner had given only three home-runs in his
last fourteen starts.
Cubs did not make any impression in the first four innings, but the fifth inning became the starter of their home-run stint. Left fielder Alfonso Soriano hammered a 433-feet long one-run homer to kick the game off against Lincecum.
Then in the seventh inning catcher Geovany Soto tagged a 392-feet long one-run to elevate the lead to 2-0. Second baseman Blake DeWitt followed with his dazzling hit to right-field for three runs. The Cubs had taken 6-0 lead until the end of the seventh
inning.
Lincecum left the mound after allowing five runs on six hits and walking four over six innings. Steve Edlefsen replaced Lincecum but could not perform as per the expectation of the manager Bruce Bochy and allowed a homer to Carlos Pena. It was the third
home-run of the inning and fourth of the game. Edlefsen then rebounded and completed next two innings without giving any hit.
Javier Lopez threw the last inning for the Giants and gave away an RBI single on two hits.
It was the Giants’ 64th loss and the way they are receiving these can cause serious damage to the World Series Champions. Their Championship is already in doubt due to a low number of wins. They have made just 71 wins while their League rivals
Philadelphia Phillies are leading the majors with 84 wins.
