Chicago Cubs sweep the series with impressive 3-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs on Sunday, July 15, beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1 to sweep the three-game series at Wrigley Field, Chicago. The Cubs came forth with invulnerable defence backed by an equally strong offence to finish the series with an impressive win.
Matt Garza put on display his ever improving pitching skills, throwing seven shut-out innings and Darwin Barney hit a two-run homer in the second inning to pave the way for a much-awaited win for the Cubs.
But it was an exhilarating day for Garza who had the best of his pitching since April, winning at the very right time for the Cubs.
"I felt good today," Garza said. "I was able to stay in my mechanics today, and when I didn't I was able to catch myself and adjust quick."
Garza’s seven shut-out innings was actually backed by the solid offence put by the Cubs' hitters. Anthony Rizzo singled to right in the very first inning to give the Cubs 1-0 lead followed by the two-run homer coming off Darwin Barney’s bat. Rizzo now has a .356 batting average with no less than 10 RBIs to his credit in the 15 games he has played so far.
This was the fourth homer that Barney hit this season. He has certainly made some of the best adjustments.
"It's not my approach but you've got to make adjustments at this level," Barney said. "Two strikes, I'm looking to hit the ball the other way toward second, but luckily I ran into something."
Trevor Cahill gave up three runs in his 5.1 inning spell, having had three strike-outs. Aaron Hill of the Arizona Diamondbacks homered in the eighth inning as Shawn Camp gave up a hit in his one-inning spell, bringing the lead down to 3-1.
However, Carlos Marmol was hard to play. The closer had a strike-out to conclude the game with 3-1 win for the Cubs, allowing the team to sweep the series against a relatively stronger side. The Cubs have now won 12 of their last 16 games, a transformation and surge that will be a refreshing change for the club.
