Chicago Cubs’ top second baseman Darwin Barney’s ascent continue
Chicago Cubs’ second baseman Darwin Barney was recently named the top defensive player of the club in the first Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Awards. This comes after he had earned the National League's top defensive second baseman, winning his first
Rawlings Gold Glove Award.
While for the Gold Glove Award he faced tough competition – from no less than the gigantic and formidable Cincinnati Reds’ second baseman Brandon Phillips, in the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Award he had a smooth sailing as he incontrovertibly fared
as the best player in the club.
Turn 27 only yesterday, Barney has a bright future ahead. As his team is in the building phase, he is expected to be an invaluable asset of the team, adding to its strength and contributing to the team’s rise as one of the competitive in the National League
Central, and National League as a whole.
What entitled him to Gold Glove Award was his 141-game errorless streak, a feat that will seemingly remain unbreakable in the years to come. Barney was declared a Gold Glove material by none other than the team manager Dale Sveum due largely to the performance
he exhibited throughout the year.
His performance was central in helping the team to grapple with some odds that would otherwise be difficult to handle.
From the errorless streak, that earned him fame and immense praise, to the hitting, Barney has been trying to establish his credibility as a consistent player representing the Cubs.
"I think Barney is better than that. He puts everything into the package, going for popups down the right-field line, double plays, the range -- he has so many different things in his tool box. It's not just a guy catching the ball, routine balls -- he was
spectacular all season."
Nonetheless, the Chicago Cubs’ second baseman Darwin Barney has set his eyes on something more lofty and illustrious as he has the talent and will to accomplish whatever he aims.
"Winning Gold Gloves doesn't satisfy me for the future. It makes me proud of my season. It makes me hungry to work and try to get another one someday. ... It's been a long path. It's a big accomplishment for me."
With the recent top defensive player award after the Gold Glove honour, Barney will be looked to as – most probably, the Cubs’ Brandon Phillips. That will radically alter the Cubs as a club that has recently failed to live up to the fans’ expectations.
