Chicago Cubs unsure if Matt Garza will be starting Tuesday's game – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum on Friday, August 3, said the team is still in wait-and-see mode as far as bringing pitcher Matt Garza is concerned. Garza who had cramping in his right triceps has not been pitching since July 22.
Garza was supposed to have a bullpen session on Friday which was later cut short for the reasons not cited. However, it was reported that Garza will have another session on Saturday that will give an idea whether or not he has regained his fitness and – most importantly, form.
But the team manager does not seem in any rush here. "It's pushing it," said the team manager Dale Sveum. "That's still a wait-and-see thing on how he does and recovery."
For now, if the club decides to put Garza in disabled list, the Cubs shall have an option of calling up a pitcher from Triple-A Iowa. But as to who the pitcher will be is something that the Cubs have remained silent about.
Garza was previously anticipating a pitching session on Tuesday which does not seem on the cards any longer. Nonetheless, all this development is in the backdrop of the recent trades wherein the likes of Paul Maholm and Ryan Dempster were traded to two different teams.
Matt Garza was one of the players who was rumoured to be in line to be traded. What actually obliterated that possibility was the injury he had, prompting many team to avoid going for a trade.
Garza, nonetheless, is happy staying with his team. "I figured I wasn't [going to be traded] just because of the situation and I hadn't thrown for a number of days," Garza said. "If you traded for me, you were kind of getting a blind pick. That's the way people felt. It is what it is, and I'm happy to be where I'm at and happy to still be playing."
All said, the Cubs would be eagerly awaiting the quicker recovery of the pitcher so as to fill the spot sooner than later. Dempster and Maholm’s being no longer the part of the Cubs has already created a vacuum for the experienced and strong pitchers.
