Chicago Cubs upset New York Mets 8-7 at Citi Field – MLB Update
Chicago Cubs beat the New York Mets 8-7 at Citi Field in New York on Friday, July 6 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
For the Mets, Lucas Duda homered to right-centre in the second inning to level the score 1-1.
Anthony Rizzo hit a three run home-run to right-centre in the fifth to give the Cubs some momentum. Starting pitcher Travis Wood had a decent time on the mound as he won for the fourth consecutive time.
"It was awesome, right from Reed Johnson's home run," Rizzo said. "And it carried over. Hitting is contagious no matter where you are."
"I don't think he had the stuff he's had the last few," Sveum said. "He definitely didn't have the stuff he's had in the past."
"For 10 games, he's been pretty good," Cubs’ manager Dale Sveum said. "To sit on pitches like he does, and have an educated guess like he does, is impressive."
Cubs showed great courage and determination in a game that was played on an extremely competitive note. Credit should also be given to the Mets for fighting right down to the wire. The Cubs led the score 8-3 in the eighth inning and it seemed they will cruise
to a crushing win.
New York Mets raised the level of their game-play, scoring four runs in the eighth and the ninth to add spice to the proceedings. However, the Cubs held on to their one run lead in the bottom of the ninth to secure an emphatic win. The team seems to have
found some much needed confidence in their line-up as they held on to take a decent victory over the Mets.
Right now, the Cubs are 32-51 and their chances of making it to the playoffs are very slim. However, they can certainly make themselves proud by giving better results in the second half of the season.
Despite taking the loss on Friday evening, the Mets are placed second on the National League East Division standings and it will be interesting to see if they can overpower Chicago Cubs in their next two games to narrow down the gap between themselves and
the league leaders Washington Nationals.
