Chicago Cubs weigh options after the recent acquisitions– MLB News
Aware of the challenges awaiting them, the Chicago Cubs are sorting out their priorities for the days to come – making the necessary moves and adjustments. The two-year contract with the Japanese reliever Kyuji Fujikawa was a step towards this direction.
Currently in the building phase, the Cubs have traded several veteran players and brought in the young ones. But in Fujikawa, they have an experienced pitcher who can play both as the reliever and closer.
A lot has been said about the potential role of Carlos Marmol – the Cubs closer this past season, Fujikawa is touted to be a game-changer when it comes to the strength of the club’s bullpen.
He seems all prepared to accept the challenge. Having been part of Hanshin Tigers for 12 seasons, for many young and inexperienced pitchers he can be a mentor as well. That is what he also alluded to as well.
“They welcomed me warm-heartedly, and that really got my heart,” he said. “That was one of my (reasons) for wanting to come to the Cubs. I know the team is very young. I’m a veteran. I’ll also try to lead the young players as well and try to compete to win
for the Cubs.”
Fujikawa, a quick look at his record shows, had led the Japanese League in saves in 2007 and 2011. Add to it the fact that he has a career earned-run average of 1.77 in 562 appearances. A career that spans for 12 years assumes an important role.
Cubs’ president of baseball operations is a firm believer in the talent of this Japanese pitcher.
“Our primary goal is to have him here as part of the solution,” Epstein said. “We’re a big believer in his talent, as well as his character, so we think he'll be a positive influence on our younger pitchers and will be a real stabilizer for our bullpen.”
While his talent and experience impel many to believe that he will cruise well in the Major League Baseball, a completely different environment, with fierce competition ahead, Fujikawa is well aware of the challenges.
Thus he is barely showing any complacency. From the outlook of the entire presser that was held when he was introduced at Wrigley Field, Fujikawa seems the right pitcher at the right time for the Chicago Cubs.
To be seen now is how things go for both the Cubs and the reliever in the days to come.
