Chicago Cubs yet to name starter for Sunday’s encounter with New York Mets – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum on Thursday, July 5, declined to reveal the name of the starter for the team’s series finale scheduled to be played on Sunday against the New York Mets. The name that has recently popped up is that of Ryan Dempster, but the team has switched to a cautious mode.
Prior to giving him a chance in Sunday’s game, the Cubs will first see how the starter – who has recently recuperated after almost a three week injury, handles the bullpen session to be had on Friday.
The team manager thinks Dempster is good enough play in the game. "He's good enough to keep thinking about it," Sveum said Thursday in response to the question pertaining to the fitness of the starter.
Thursday’s press talk was not limited to the questions on the possible return of Ryan Dempster alone. The team manager was to shed some light on the conversation he had with Chris Volstad after his disappointing performance against the Atlanta Braves.
In just over four innings, Chris Volstad could not restrain the Braves’ hitters that resulted in the team’s 10-3 loss. It seemed Sveum was not particularly pleased with Volstad’s performance. There were talks that miscommunication might have resulted in Volstad’s failure to follow the script chalked out by the pitching coach.
However, Thursday’s talk seems to have produced something good.
"Everything's fine," Sveum said. "It was a good talk. It was a little bit about everything. It's just a matter of talking to him about letting the catchers do their job, and he agreed. He agreed that sometimes he gets a little out of whack on the mound and this and that, and we'll leave it at that. He agreed he needs to trust them, and not that he doesn't trust them, but he gets on his own path sometimes."
Volstad has not won any game for almost a year now, causing concern not only for himself but for the team with his 7.94 ERA and a record of 0-7. It is for this reason that the team wants the player to go for an overhaul.
