Chicago Fire conquer Colorado Rapids to move into round 2, Lamar Hunt US Open Cup
Chicago Fire have made it to the second round of Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2011 with a 2-1 drubbing of Colorado Rapids at Bradley University’s Shea Stadium in Peoria. The team took advantage of the home ground as they ran through the reigning Major League Soccer (MLS) champions with a 2—1 drubbing.

The match started at snail’s pace but with the minutes ticking on the clock, the game got increasingly interesting. The Fire had a number of chances in the 90-minute stretch as did the Rapids. The first half lead lived for a short time, as the Rapids jogged on to the field in second half. The visitors were fired up for the second half and showed their intent within early minutes. The champions cancelled the lead with 47 minutes on the clock. Quincy Amarikwa fed Akpan from right side of the field and the playmaker volleyed home from just 10 yards out to restore parity.
The winner came in the 61st minute of the play from MLS youngster Jalil Anibaba’s feet. Anibaba had caused the visitors all sorts of problems until that point and his goal was the reward for all this efforts. The player received the ball 40 yards away from opposition’s net. Anibaba took a few touches before firing in a rasping drive that shook the visitor’s net.
