Chicago Sky cool off Washington Mystics 78-65, End three-game losing skid – WNBA Recap
On Tuesday night, Chicago Sky finally snapped their three-game losing streak with a 78-65 win over the Washington Mystics at Allstate Arena.
A dazzling display by Sylvia Fowles, who contributed a season-high 34 points and 16 rebounds, set Chicago up to on the night. The 25-year-old answered Washington’s bursts with her acrobatic drives and pin point jumpers and finished
the night on a 10 for 16 from the field and 14 for 17 from free throw line.
Fowles, WNBA's leading scorer with 21.9 points per game this season, scored 20 of her points in the second half of the game. This was her 8th 20 plus point performance in the last eleven games. Epiphanny Prince had 14
points and five steals while Michelle Snow grabbed 11 rebounds in the victory.
Marissa Coleman led the Mystics with 14 points and four rebounds. Coleman went 5 for 10 from the field while Guards Matee Ajavon and Jasmine Thomas tallied 11 points each in Washington’s second consecutive defeat. Nicky Anosike
grabbed a team-high 10 boards in the loss.
Chicago shot 48.1 percent from the floor and limited the Mystics to just 38.9 percent from the field including a paltry 1 for 13 from the three-point range.
Washington played the game in the absence of two of their leading players. Alana Beard is under day-to-day observation with a left foot sprain while the three-time MVP Crystal Langhorne is out for approximately 8-12 weeks with
a torn labrum in her hip.
First Quarter
Anosike scored Washington’s first four points and Coleman hit a three-pointer as Mystics carried a 7-6 lead with 06:29 to go in the first quarter. Prince responded with four consecutive points to put Chicago ahead by 10-7 but Coleman
struck again with a fade away jumper to make it a one-point contest, 10-9, with 04:43 remaining.
Sky scored the next five points of the quarter and carried a 15-9 advantage. Coleman was again in action second later. After Dunlap hit a free throw, she drove to the rim to cut Chicago’s lead to three points, 15-12 and this was
the way, the first quarter ended.
Second Quarter
The Mystics made a comeback early in the second quarter and Anosike’s free throw at 07:12 mark tied the game at 19-19. Chicago however responded with 8-0 run to take a 27-19 lead with 03:56 to go in the first half.
Prince’s jumper with 02:18 to go in the second period stretched Chicago’s lead to nine points. However Coleman’s lay-up on the next possession cut the margin to seven points, 24-31. Chicago scored the last four points of the quarter,
taking a 35-24 lead into the locker room.
Third Quarter
Sky maintained their dominance in the third frame and Young’s lay-up with 04:18 left in the third quarter gave Chicago a 48-33 lead. Thomas punched back immediately with a driving layup to make it 48-35, but that didn’t halt the
Sky juggernaut as they four unanswered points and took a 52-35 edge.
Washington however did manage a 6-2 spurt in the last two minutes of the quarter to trim the deficit somewhat, (54-41) heading into the fourth.
Fourth Quarter
As the fourth quarter began Chicago picked up right from where they left off in the third, storming out to a quick 16-point lead via a 13-10 stretch in the first five minutes. Washington however retaliated after that and cut the
deficit to 10 points, 73-63, with around two minutes remaining in the game. Their efforts all went in vain though a s Chicago bounced right back and scored the next five points to put the game out of reach.
