Chicago White Sox Manager, Ozzie Guillen, talks about Michael Young
Michael Young has till Sunday to decide his fate but the Chicago White Sox manager, Ozzie Guillen, is wishing his squad had the chance to bag the rights to the player. The club is sanctioned out of the trade-clause agreement between Young and the Texas Rangers,
and is not part of Young’s approval teams.
The White Sox have a lot of power riding into this season and with Young on the horizon that power would have enhanced with extra options for positions and hitting.
The massive salary obligation that comes with the player is another source of hindrance for any possible buyer. The third baseman has an outstanding balance of $48 million owed to him and the Texas Rangers will not want the other club to enforce that figure
on them without gaining prospects from the minor league.
Guillen was available at the Comcast SportsNet Sports Awards to benefit the March of Dimes. He told the press about his thoughts on Young; with a $123 million budget for the year, the White Sox look less likely to bring on another player for the 2011 campaign.
"I don't know if we have money," manager Ozzie Guillen said laughingly.
"Everybody in Chicago knows how much I love him (Young)," said Guillen. "It's a name that is going to make any lineup better. But I'm happy with what I have (at third base), very happy."
Guillen has a spot open at third base as rookie, Brent Morel, is up to provide his services for the club on that position. There other players involved in the mix and they include Mark Teahen, Omar Vizquel and Dayan Viciedo. However having Michael Young
could boost the club’s statistics, and Ozzie indicated that a deal, though unlikely, may be possible.
"You know one thing, you never know with Kenny," Guillen said. "I don't think we are going to get him because of all the money he's got left, but all of a sudden, Kenny will be giving me a call saying, 'We got this guy.' I know one thing: this kid is a (heck
of a) player, no matter where he goes or if he stays in Texas."
