Chicago White Sox Ramon Castro ends up with broken hand – MLB News
Ramon Castro, catcher for the Chicago White Sox broke his right hand as Mark Buehrle’s pitch hit him during their game against the Minnesota Twins on Saturday, July 9. As a result, Tyler Flowers has been called up to replace him.
Mark Buehrle’s pitch came faster than the White Sox catcher might have anticipated and was missed by Alexi Casilla of the Twins that ended up hitting on the right hand of Castro. "I called fastball away and the ball was inside," Castro said. "I moved, and
forgot to get my (right) hand back behind me."
The White Sox catcher has played 23 games in the 2011 regular season with 68 at-bats. Although his record does not come across as impressive, he has maintained an average of .235 all this with six runs.
Interestingly, the team has performed phenomenally well in his presence with seven victories out of the 10 games they have played.
Although Pierzynski was available to replace Castro quickly, it’s unknown how long will it take the catcher to recover. Ozzie Guillen, the White Sox manager, wonders if such a pitch could break one’s hand.
The game which was not going Chicago’s way on that fateful night was, turned in the White Sox favour afterwards by Pierzynski with his double that guided the team to a 4-3 win against the Twins.
The White Sox stand 17th in the Major League Baseball ranking this week with 44 wins and 48 losses. Having had the hitter like Adam Dunn and pitcher like Mark Buehrle, the team combines a pool of talent to boast and to improve their record.
The team, however, stands fifth in the Central Division, only preceding the Houston Astros. The White Sox are looking to improve their position by putting in some good performances in their next match-ups. Milwaukee Brewers occupy the top position in the
central division with 49 wins.
While A. J. Pierzynski was there to immediately replace Castro in the game and played well to attain an impressive victory for the White Sox, the team will certainly be looking forward to getting their injured players back early to keep the ball rolling.
The White Sox will be looking closely at the outlook for Castro, as he is a very talented catcher for the team. Chicago does not want too many players on the disabled list for extended periods, as the regular season is entering into a critical phase. The
White Sox understand the importance of a quality catcher and the commitment Castro gives to the team throughout every game.
The team will be keeping their fingers crossed as Castro’s fate will now be known after an MRI exam.
