Chicago White Sox defeat Detroit Tigers 6-3 – MLB Update
Mark Buehrle pitched six strong innings on Monday, July 25, as the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 6-3 at U.S. Cellular Field.
Buehrle’s pitching spell would hardly be rewarded were it not for the Paul Konerko and A.J. Pierzynsk’s homers in the fifth inning to completely change the map of the game. Buehrle, in effect, perfected the victory.
"Buehrle's been like that all his life," Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen said. "You pick the mistake up and that's what Buehrle does. He got out there and regardless of what happens behind him, he continues to do what he does and never complain about anything."
Even though the game did not seem to start in the White Sox favour as Victor Martinez and Jhonny Peralta scored a run each in the third inning against Buehrle, the White Sox offence made an early comeback to keep the game within a pass that served them well
at the end.
Paul Konerko scored the first run for the White Sox in the third inning against Duane Below who had thrown the initial two innings scoreless to pave the way for a stronger offence. Once the White Sox brought the lead down to 2-1 Buehrle paced up his pitching.
"I know they feel bad when they don't make a play and you try to pitch out of it. I try to pick them up," Buehrle said.
Alexei Ramirez scored a run in the fifth inning to level the score as Below made things more difficult for the Tigers’ offence. Carlos Quentin hit a two-run homer to give the White Sox a comfortable lead of 4-2 in the game.
A.J. Pierzynski homered in the sixth to further strengthen the White Sox grip on the game while the Tigers’ offence was finding it hard to prove their instrumentality. Once Jesse Crain relieved Buehrle, Miguel Cabrera scored the third run for the Tigers
in the seventh inning.
However, the White Sox reciprocated by Konerko’s homer to give an irreversible 6-3 lead to the White Sox. Unlike his seventh inning, Jesse Crain threw the eighth scoreless and Chris Sale pitched a shutout ninth to turn the 6-3 lead into a White Sox victory
in the first of three-game series.
With 54 wins, the Tigers still hold sway on the White Sox which have won 50 of their games and lost 51 compared to the 48 of the Tigers. Chicago put in a tremendous effort as they managed to restrict Detroits’ offence from scoring in the crucial innings.
Detroit will be looking to improve their performance in their next match-up. It will be interesting to see how the White Sox carry their winning momentum into their next game.
