Chicago White Sox defeat Minnesota Twins 5-3 – MLB Update
Mark Buehrle pitched eight strong innings on Friday, August 5 to help the Chicago White Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 5-3 in the first of three-game series at Target Field.
In the last 17 games that the White Sox starter has appeared, he has allowed three or less than three to wrap up the games. This win also put an end to the losing streak of the White Sox that had extended to six games prior to this encounter.
Ozzie Guillen, the White Sox team manager, had his explanation to offer once he asked if he believed in luck. "Sometimes I put my hopes so high, then a few days later I have a broken heart," he said.
An equally different response came from Mark Buehrle when inquired about luck. "Luck? I don't know," Buehrle said when asked how he's managed to run off this streak late in his career. "It's everything. I can't put my finger on just one thing."
The game on Friday kicked off with Carlos Quentin’s early RBI single against the Nick Blackburn. The 1-hit one-run first inning did not last long as the Twins hit back when Mark Buehrle came for pitching on the mound.
Buehrle, having backed by a 1-0 lead of the White Sox, saw an inning that brought three runs for the Twins. However, all the runs were unearned in the first inning. Were it not for Adam Dunn’s error, the Twins would not be able to take up the lead to 3-1.
After allowing a run in the first inning, Nick Blackburn tossed a shut-out second followed by Carlos Quentin and the White Sox second run in the third inning that brought the lead down to 3-2 in the White Sox favour.
Buehrle whose first inning was a virtual disaster, thanks to the error by Dunn, then pitched strong enough inning to contain the Twins’ hitters. Carlos Quentin did what only a hitter of his calibre could.
Quentin hit a two-run homer to finally edge past the Twins with 4-3 lead by the end of fifth inning. Remaining four at-bats, Quentin had two hits and two runs to add to the White Sox score at a crucial moment.
While Buehrle kept up accelerating his pace and adding to the woes of the Twins hitters, A. J. Pierzynski scored a single in the eighth to take the lead to 5-3 for Chicago. The White Sox managed to put in a tremendous effort as they restricted the Twins’
offence from scoring in the crucial innings. Chris Sale who came as a closer in the ninth inning tossed a shut-out to wrap up the game 5-3 for the White Sox.
